The legitimate and elected government sits in prison while the country is being held hostage by the military junta. This is essentially massacre by inaction, allowing large sections of the population to perish by preventing international aid, and confiscating whatever aid do get in.

While it is difficult to assess what influence China has on the Burmese junta, it is also true that China is their largest trading partner. What leverage does China have, and how can they be used? What are the advantages to China in continuing to back this regime? What are the dangers of doing so?
